JSPS Fellowship 2020: JSPS fellowship provides programs for researchers staying abroad who have an outstanding record of research accomplishments to lead collaborative research, consultations, and opinion transfers with researchers in Japan. JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme 2020 is planned to provide encouraging, highly equipped, young researchers with the possibility to manage advanced research related to the principal thematic centre areas of the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS, Tokyo) in partnership with host researchers at Japanese universities and research organisations. The fellowships are granted to the fellows for a duration of 12 to 24 months. There is a monthly subsistence allowance of JPY 362,000 and other advantages for the awarded candidates.

JSPS Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
- To apply for JSPS postdoctoral fellowship, a candidate should possess designated eligibility criteria:
- He/She should be hold PhD degree in the related field including but not restricted to Sociology, Technology and Innovation (STI), Political Science, Science, Legal and other Social Sciences, and Civil Engineering
- Candidates should have confirmed research skills in related areas
- Candidates should have the capability to design and execute research including fieldwork
- Candidates should be vocal in the English language apart from having a practical knowledge of other languages
Note: Candidates who have earlier been granted a Standard or Pathway Fellowship below the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan plan are not suitable.
JSPS Fellowship Rewards
- The candidates who are selected as postdoctoral fellows can avail the following privileges:
- Airfare based on JSPS regulations in both ways.
- Monthly subsistence allowance of JPY 362,000
- Living allowance of JPY 200,000 as per JSPS regulations
- An abroad journey, accident, and illness protection coverage, etc.
JSPS Fellowship Application
- Candidates who wish to apply for JSPS postdoctoral fellowship need to follow the steps given:
- Candidates have to download the application form from the official website.
- Candidates need to provide all the necessary details.
- After completion of the application form candidates have to send the form with backing documents by email to [email protected].
The application forms presented will be examined by the Fellowship Committee and the shortlisted applicants will be communicated for a telephonic interview and to submit reference letters.
Terms and Conditions
- The needed documents designated in the application must be in English. If necessary documents are not in English, then the equivalent English translations must be associated.
- Evaluation of applications by the fellowship council will begin shortly after the deadline of the application.
- The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme commences on 1st of September and the chosen fellows are asked to be in Japan by the given date.
- UNU-IAS will serve as the nominating administration of the program and applications form should be
- presented to UNU-IAS, which will help in acquiring acceptance from host researchers for shortlisted applicants.
- Japanese citizens are not eligible to apply for this fellowship. Also, those of dual nationality are not eligible if one is Japanese.
