The objective of the Emeritus Fellowship is:
To allow superannuated teachers to continue active research in their corresponding field of specialization in Indian
- Universities/Colleges/ Institutions, as shown below:
- Universities/Institutions/Colleges below section 2(f) and 12(b) of UGC Act, 1956.
- Deemed Universities below section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 which are qualified to receive the grant in support from UGC.
- Universities/Institutions/Colleges backed by Central/ State Govt.
- Institutes of National Importance
UGC Emeritus Fellowship Eligibility
Target Group:
Extremely qualified and experienced, antiquated teachers of acknowledged universities/ colleges/institutions.
Eligibility:
- The eligibility of the candidate will be based on the nature of research and printed work provided by the teacher in his/her duty career.
- The awardee (antiquated) can operate under this scheme with a well-defined time-bound execution plan up to the age of 70 years or up to two years (non-extendable) of the award whichever is first.
- Transgender applicants are qualified to apply under the scheme. The reservation for them is followed as per the Govt. of India standards.
UGC Emeritus Fellowship Reward
The amount of slots available under this scheme:
- 100 for Science streams
- 100 for Humanities, Social Sciences and Languages
- Based on at any one given time there are total 200 slots
- The support available under the plan is:
- An honorarium of Rs. 31,000/- p.m. for two years.
- Contingency allowance (non-lapsable) of Rs. 50,000/- per annum towards secretarial support, travel within the nation connected with the research scheme, stationery, books, postage, consumables and journals and equipment. However, magazines, journals and types of equipment etc. gained out of the contingency allowance will be the property of the university/college/institute.
- International visit in conjunction with the recommended research work of the awardee will be restricted to once in a year with the prior consent/no-objection of the Institution/University where the project job is undertaken along with that of UGC. This will be further subject to no monetary liability on the part of UGC.
The investment would be considered for audit by the university administration concerned like any additional departmental expense. The Emeritus Fellow would be empowered to such other privileges, including medical benefits as available to the university staff members, but no house facility is given.
UGC Emeritus Fellowship Application Procedure
Application forms are summoned through online mode every year through an announcement in leading newspapers and job news. Short information is also uploaded on the UGC portal.

- Interested applicants have to visit Official site, www.ugc.ac.in
- Select a suitable link as “e-SARTS Scholarships-Fellowships” at home page.
- Now click on “Emeritus Fellowship” link noticeable on the appeared page.
- Go through all the details given on the portal, carefully.
- Click on “Apply Now” button after going through the instructions regarding fellowship.
- Tick mark the checkbox and click on “Proceed for Registration” button.
- Start filling the form by correctly entering information.
- Provide the personal details as per asked and submit.
- An applicant registration id is generated that can be used for making a PDF file once the application form is submitted.
- Provide your Career and Qualification details, including higher qualification and professional data.
- Give your Project Information including suggested project information etc.
- Now, finally submit the form.
Note:
Applicants have to apply rigorously as per the guidance given in the online portal. Incomplete form will not be considered.
Applicants applying for Emeritus Fellowship have to upload the Undertaking Certificate from the suggested research centre duly approved by the HOD and Registrar/Principal/Director of the University/College/Institute.
In case of duplicated applications, the most advanced will be considered.
UGC Emeritus Fellowship Selection Procedure
- Emeritus Fellowship is granted based on the recommendation of the Expert Committee appointed by the Commission for the goal.
- The candidate should not be carrying any other post or be productively employed anyplace at the time of entering the Emeritus Fellowship Award.
- The grant is subject to UGC norms and will be productive from 1st April of the election year or the exact date of joining in the University/College/Institute, whichever is next.
- The Commission holds the right to withdraw/cancel the grant without specifying any reason.
The applicant should join the fellowship within three months from the date of issuance of Award letter, missing which the award will be considered as cancelled.
Terms and Conditions
The grant is subject to be cancelled in the following cases:
- If the fellow is found not eligible for receiving the award, at any point of time during the whole duration of the fellowship.
- Any incorrect information provided by the applicant
- Misbehaviour of Awardee
- Inadequate progress of research performance of the awardee
