The Bewitched Jacket Introduction:

It is a mystery story. The narrator meets a stranger at a party. The stranger is wearing nicely tailored clothes. The narrator asks him the name of the tailor. He goes to the same tailor and orders a suit for himself. When the narrator asks him its price, the tailor says that there is no hurry. After three weeks, the narrator gets his suit.

It is a jacket, a pair of trousers and a vest. By chance, the narrator puts his hand in the right pocket of the jacket. He finds in it a ten thousand lira note. The narrator thinks that the tailor must have put it there and forgotten about it. But he is surprised when the same thing happens every time he puts his hand in the pocket. In one night, he collects 58 million lire.

But the next morning there is news of a bank robbery of 58 million. The narrator is filled with fear. Still he works the next night and collects 135 million. This time there is news of a big fire in which more than 135 million is lost in cash. The narrator notes that every time he collects money from his pocket, something bad happens in the world. However, he grows very rich. He buys a big villa and has big automobiles. He has a good amount of money in his bank also. But then one morning, it is found that an old woman has committed suicide.

She lived in the same building in which the narrator had lived for a long time. She commits suicide because she had mislaid her monthly pension of 30 thousand lire. The same amount of money the narrator had collected from his pocket the day before. He can bear it no longer and doesn’t want to keep the jacket with him. He goes to a hilly place and burns the jacket. When he comes back, he finds that his car, his villa and his bank balance have all disappeard. Now he fears that someday the cursed tailor will come and ask for his bill.

The narrator was at his office. He put his hand into the pocket of his jacket. There was a piece of paper in it. The narrator thought it was the tailor’s bill. But when he took it out, it was a ten-thousand-lira note. The narrator thought the tailor might have put it there and then forgotten about it. So he called his secretary to write a letter to the tailor. But before the secretary came, he had felt another piece of paper in his pocket. He turned as pale as death.

Summary of The Bewitched Jacket

In the meantime, the secretary came in. She asked the narrator if he was feeling ill. The narrator said it was just a little dizziness. He sent her back saying that he would dictate the letter later. When she had gone, he took out the piece of paper from his pocket. It was another ten-thousand-lira note. Then he tried a third time. And a third banknote came out.

The narrator left the office and went home. He shut the doors and lowered the blinds. He started taking out the notes. There was a heap of notes before him. He counted them. There were 58 million lire. He emptied an old trunk and hid the money in it.

The maid came in the morning. She saw the narrator in bed wearing a suit. She looked surprised. The narrator told her that he had drunk a little too much the night before. The maid asked the narrator to take off the suit so that she could brush it. But the narrator said that he had to go out immediately and had no time to change. He went to a garment store and bought another suit of the same kind. He decided to leave this one in the maid’s care, and hide the other one in a safe place.

But there was news in the morning papers which dampened his joy. There was news of a bank robbery. A bank’s car was carrying money to the main office. Four criminals stopped it and killed a man. They took away all the money. It was 58 million lire. This incident left the narrator a little confused. But the same evening he set to work again. He was already rich but he wanted to become richer. This time he got 135 million.

In the morning papers, there was again news. A terrible fire had destroyed a warehouse in which more than 135 million were lost in cash. Two firemen were also killed while putting out the fire. The narrator now knew that the money in his pocket was coming from crimes, blood and death. But he didn’t blame himself for it. He continued drawing more and more money from his jacket. He bought a huge villa and had big automobiles to drive around.

One morning, an old woman was found dead in the same building where the narrator had lived for many years. She had killed herself because she had mislaid her monthly pension of 30 thousand lire. The narrator had drawn the same amount from his jacket a day before. He realised that every time he drew money from his pocket, there was something bad in the world. He could bear it no longer. He decided to destroy his jacket.

The narrator took his car and went to a hilly place. There he burnt the jacket to ashes. As the flames were dying out, he heard a human voice. It said, “Too late, too late !” The narrator tried to find who it was, but he could see none there.

However, he was happy that he had got rid of the jacket. But when he came back he saw that his car, his villa and his savings account had disappeared. There was nothing but dust in the old trunk. The play opens in the Audience Room of the King’s palace. The Prime Minister, the has ncellor, two Ladies-in-waiting and a Courtier are waiting for the new King. None of them – seen the new King before and they are anxious to meet him.From the way they behave in the King’s absence, we get an idea of what kind of people they are. Of the two ladies-in-waiting, the First Lady is tall and slim. The Second Lady is short and very fat. The Prime Minister starts talking foolishly. The First Lady calls him silly.

The Second Lady says that it does not matter how silly he is if he is the Prime Minister. The Chancellor is sitting on the arm of the King’s throne. The Prime Minister at once goes up the steps, pushes the Chancellor away, and sits on the throne. Seeing this, the courtier says meaningfully, “I expect the Prime Minister found the steps hard.” Then through the window, he says that it is raining outside, yet there are crowds of people in the street. Among them he sees the new King coming and says, “Well, that’s queer !”

He is wearing a bowler hat and walks with a big limp. Behind him is a Page carrying a dog on a cushion. Behind the Page, there are two Neighbours. Each of them is holding a chain attached to the dog’s collar. The King goes up to the throne. Everyone looks astonished at the King’s unusual appearance. The Second Lady says in a whisper that the King is wearing a funny hat. The Prime Minister whispers that the King limps.

The Prime Minister wants to know about the two meñ the King has brought with him. The King says that he had seen them fighting in the street and brought them with him to settle their dispute. The Chancellor says that it is unusual to bring common people into the · palace. At this the King says, “What did you expect me to do ? Let them go on fighting ?”

The King sees everyone staring at his bowler hat. He asks them what wrong is with his hat. The Chancellor says that their previous King used to wear a crown. The King says, “What ! In this blazing sun ?” He says that he was wearing a hat to save himself from sunstroke. At once the Chancellor takes off his coronet and hands it to a servant. Both the Prime Minister and the Chancellor get for themselves the bowler hats to wear. They start limping also like the King. The King asks them what trouble they have.

The Prime Minister says that he has got a cramp in his leg. The Chancellor says that he has rheumatism. The Second Lady is also seen limping. She says she has sprained her ankle. Both the First Lady and the Courtier behave in their normal, natural manner. The King asks them if there is nothing wrong with them. Both of them say that they have always been very healthy.

Summary of The King who Limped

The Pointing to the two Neighbours, the King asks the Prime Minister what he should do w them. The Prime Minister says that both of them should be put in prison.

King : What for?
Chancellor : For causing a breach of peace.
Second Lady : What is a breach of peace ?
First Lady : Be quiet. You are one !
King : (To the Courtier) What would you do ?
Courtier : I would listen to what they have to say.

At this, the King asks the two Neighbours what they have to say for themselves. The First Neighbour says that he had found the dog starving in the street. He took the dog home and fed it for three months. The Second Neighbour calls the First Neighbour a liar. He says that the dog was his, and it was given to him by his brother. When the King asks him to go and fetch his brother, he says that his brother is dead. Thus it becomes difficult to decide who the real owner is.

King : What is to be done now?
Courtier : Keep the dog yourself, Your Majesty. Then no one can quarrel about it.
King : But I don’t care for dogs. I like cats better.
First Lady : Why not divide the dog in two and give them half each?

The First Neighbour at once agrees to it. But the Second one says, “Let him keep the dog, Your Majesty. It is a good little dog. I cannot bear to see it harmed. Let him have the dog.” The King at once knows the truth. He gives the dog to the Second Neighbour and sends the First one to prison. Then he gets up, takes off his bowler hat and puts it on the throne. Now he walks quite naturally and comes to the Chancellor.

King : Have you still got rheumatism?
Chancellor : Your Majesty, the pain is going off.
King : Why are you wearing a bowler hat ? It looks funny.
Chancellor : Because it is a sunny day, as you yourself said, Your Majesty.
King : Rubbish ! You limped because I limped.

You wore a bowler hat because I wore one. It is raining outside, but you say it is a sunny day, because I said it was a sunny day. You are what they call a sycophant. ………… I put on a limp and wore a funny hat to find out, if there were any honest people in the court. I have found two.

The King removes the Chancellor, the Prime Minister and the Second Lady-in-waiting from the positions they are holding. He makes the Courtier his Prime Minister and the First Lady the chief Lady-in-waiting. And he orders his men to take the bowler hats to the town museum and put them there.

The dog barks at them and tries to frighten them away. He even bites one of the thieves. The other thief hits him in his belly with a pole. The poor animal cries in pain. At night, he is caught by a crocodile and pulled into the water.

The flood water begins to recede after a few days. The master comes there looking for the dog. He finds the dog dead under a coconut tree. The dog is all rotten. One of his ears has been bitten off. The master turns the dog over with his toe. He is not certain whether it is his dog.

He came out through it and looked around. At some distance there was a boat. He cried aloud to the boatmen. Luckily, they heard him and came to his help. Chenna, his wife and the kids came upon the rooftop. They got into the boat. The cat also jumped in. But no one took notice of the dog. He was still sniffing around in one corner of the hut. The boat started moving. It was soon in mid-water.

Heavy rain started again. A huge crocodile came near the hut. The dog lowered his tail in fear. But the crocodile went away without doing any harm. The hungry dog kept crying for a long time in the night. Then he was too tired to cry. He heard a man chanting the Ramayana. Again the dog started crying. Soon there was no sound of chanting. The only sound was the sound of the waves and the roar of the wind. Then it was morning. The sun shone for some time. The dog dozed off in the sunlight.

The dog woke up. Dead animals were floating around. A small boat came moving fast. It was a little away from the hut. The dog stood up and started wagging his tail. But the boat soon disappeared. It started drizzling again. The dog looked helpless. After some time the drizzle stopped. Another boat came that way. It stopped at the coconut tree. The dog wagged his tail and made noises. But the boatman picked a coconut and rowed away.

Just then two men came in a boat. They heard the dog barking in the dark. The dog at once knew they were thieves. He jumped down from the rooftop. One of the men got frightened. He fell into the water. The other man pulled him out. The dog swam back to the roof. He continued barking. The thieves picked all the bananas from the trees.

Then they loaded the boat with hay from the haystack. The dog kept barking wildly. One of the thieves climbed on to the rooftop. The dog bit him hard. The man cried in pain. The other thief picked up a pole and hit the dog in the belly. The dog cried in pain. The two thieves left the place.

No one heard the groan of the dog after that. Here and there, rotten corpses floated on the water. Crows were eating them. There was no sound at all. The thieves were having a nice time. The hut stayed above water until the dog was caught by a crocodile and pulled down into the water. And then the hut too went down and sank in the water.

After a few days, the flood water had started receding. Chenna came back swimming in search of the dog. He found the dog dead under a coconut tree. He turned it from side to side with his toe. He was not sure if it was his dog. One ear was bitten off. The body was all rotten. Its colour had changed.

‘शहीद सुखदेव डॉ० रविकुमार ‘अनु’ द्वारा लिखित निबन्ध है। इस निबन्ध में लेखक ने शहीद सखदेव के जीवन की घटनाओं का वर्णन किया है। उन्होंने अंग्रेजी साम्राज्य की नींव को हिलाने में पंजाब के क्रांतिकारियों द्वारा हुए आंदोलनों के पीछे शहीद सुखदेव की महत्त्वूपर्ण भूमिका पर प्रकाश डाला है। शहीद सुखदेव का जन्म 15 मई, सन् 1907 को लुधियाना के मुहल्ला नौधराँ में हुआ। आपके पिता उन दिनों लायलपुर में व्यापार करते थे। आपके जन्म के बाद आपके पिता ने इन्हें माता सहित लायलपुर बुला लिया। सन् 1910 में आपके पिता का देहांत हो गया। आपका पालन-पोषण आपके ताया लाला चिंतराम थापर ने किया। लाला चिंतराम आर्य समाजी विचारधारा रखते थे। वे आर्यसमाज के कार्यों में बढ़-चढ़ कर हिस्सा लेते थे। सुखदेव पर उनका बहुत प्रभाव पड़ा।

प्रस्तुत निबन्ध स्वामी विवेकानन्द जी के विद्यार्थियों को सम्बोधित करते हुए दिए गए एक भाषण का अंश है। स्वामी जी को युवाओं से बहुत आशाएँ हैं इसलिए उन्होंने इस भाषण में भारतीय नवयुवकों को चरित्रनिर्माण की शिक्षा देते हुए उन्हें राष्ट्र के नव-निर्माण के लिए प्रेरित किया है। स्वामी जी का कहना है कि इस समय देश को शारीरिक दृष्टि से मज़बूत निर्भय नवयुवकों की ज़रूरत है जो अपने आप में और अपनी शक्ति में विश्वास रखते हों। स्वामी जी की दृष्टि में जो अपने पर विश्वास नहीं रखता वह नास्तिक है। उसे ईश्वर पर विश्वास नहीं। भारतीय आदर्श त्याग और सेवा है। इन्हें अपनाकर गरीबों, भूखों और दलितों की सेवा करना राष्ट्र की सब से बड़ी सेवा है।

राष्ट्रभक्ति कोरी भावना नहीं है, उसका आधार विवेक और प्रेम है। इसका विवेकपूर्वक प्रयोग करते हुए बाहरी भेदभाव भुलाकर प्रत्येक मनुष्य से प्रेम करना चाहिए। शिक्षा के विषय में स्वामी जी का मत है कि शिक्षा विभिन्न जानकारियों का ढेर नहीं है जो मनुष्य के दिमाग में भर दिया जाए; अपितु शिक्षा उन विचारों की अनुभूति है जो जीवन निर्माण, मनुष्य निर्माण और चरित्र निर्माण में सहायक हो। लेखक युवाओं को कहता है कि उन्हें अपने लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने के लिए निरन्तर प्रयासरत रहना चाहिए। स्वामी जी कहते हैं कि दलबंदी और ईर्ष्या से ऊपर उठकर यदि तुम पृथ्वी की तरह सहनशील हो जाओगे तो इस गुण के बल पर संसार तुम्हारे कदमों में लेटेगा।
